Florida has bought out the largest sugar producer in the United States in an effort to save the fabled Everglades wetlands, US media said.

It involves some 75,678 hectares, bought for US$1.75 billion ($2.39 billion). The announcement capped months of secret negotiations with the US Sugar Corporation. The 1.5 million-acre Everglades is the third-largest national park in the lower 48 US states, after Death Valley and Yellowstone. AFP
